Founded in 1974, Coastal Community Foundation empowers individuals, families, and organizations to make lasting impact through permanent, endowed funds for charitable giving.

The Foundation works with each donor to create an individual philanthropy plan and empowers recipient organizations to expand services, create new initiatives, and implement long-term programming.

 

Coastal Community Foundation is affiliated with the international Council on Foundations and serves nine counties in coastal South Carolina: Charleston, Beaufort, Berkeley, Colleton, Dorchester, Georgetown, Hampton, Horry and Jasper. The Foundation maintains office locations in Charleston and Beaufort.

Unique in its mission to foster philanthropy for the lasting good of the community, Coastal Community Foundation currently manages more than $225 million in assets and awarded $20 million in grants in its last fiscal year.

Affiliates

As a separate legal entity and with its grants determined by an autonomous governing board, an affiliate foundation allows you to retain control of all of your giving without handling the extensive legal and financial paperwork needed to create and run a private foundation.  Coastal Community Foundation also handles asset management for, provides grantmaking and technical assistance to, and offers all non-profit information needed to ease giving decisions to its supporting organizations.

The following are Coastal Community Foundation’s Affiliate Foundations:

Hide Mission The Jewish Endowment Fund, Inc. (1996)

To encourage donors to endow their support of Jewish causes, the Jewish community and the Charleston Jewish Federation.

Hide Mission Saul Alexander Fund (1997)

To provide grants in the areas and proportions stipulated by Mr. Alexander in his will: 50% to Jewish causes, 15% to charitable causes in Summerville, and 35% to general charitable causes in Charleston County and Summerville.

Hide Mission Frances P. Bunnelle Foundation (2000)

Dedicated  to strengthening and supporting charitable causes serving Georgetown County, South Carolina. Founded by its namesake prior to her death in 2000, the Foundation embodies her vision of a community with abundant opportunity for healthy, safe and sustainable living.

Hide Mission Darby Family Foundation (2001)

To provide charitable resources to the communities and causes about which family members care passionately.

Hide Mission Waccamaw Community Foundation (2015)

    Darrin is a leader across sectors, including government, nonprofits, higher education and private industry. Before joining Coastal Community Foundation, Darrin worked as President & CEO of Capital Area United Way in Baton Rouge, LA and Vice President of Community Impact at United Way of Greenville County. Darrin participated in The Riley Institute’s Diversity Leadership Institute in 2010 and also facilitated the creation of the SC Legislative Black Caucus’ 2013-14 Legislative Agenda. In his spare time, Darrin enjoys reading, writing and playing golf. A U.S. Army veteran, Darrin received his undergraduate degree from Wofford College and his masters from North Greenville University.

    As the Executive Assistant at CCF, Rebeccah handles correspondence for Darrin, working closely with donor services and stewardship as well. She graduated with a B.A. in Political Science from The College of Charleston and is an almost life-long area resident. Rebeccah enjoys gardening, all things saltwater and Charleston/South Carolina history. She and her husband Lawton are raising two amazing teens, and Rebeccah is always in possession of a good story.

    Angel Johnson-Brebner (Chief Operating Officer)

    Beginning her time at the Foundation more than ten years ago, Angel Johnson-Brebner knows the ins and outs of donor services. As Chief Operating Officer, Angel is responsible for donor education and relations as well as day-to-day operational matters. The Wofford grad also was named to the 2012 Hull Fellowship Class, a leadership program of the Southeastern Council of Foundations for Foundation Leaders.  When she isn’t busy helping fund establishers and contacts with questions, enjoys spending time with her husband, Alec, chasing after her four-and-a-half-year old, gardening, biking with her family and cooking.

    Working as an executive in human services and higher education fundraising for nearly 18 years, Steffanie has extensive knowledge of the non-profit sector and a high degree of experience in development, major gift solicitation, strategic planning, and capital campaign management.  Steffanie is passionate about working with a variety of individuals and organizations to help them define and reach their philanthropic goals.  In her spare time, Steffanie enjoys cooking, traveling, and family life with her husband John and daughter Hannah.

    Since moving to Beaufort in 2007, Gloria has worked in fundraising and community relations for higher education and grassroots nonprofits across the Southern Lowcountry. She has served on several nonprofit boards and looks for any opportunity to improve the lives of others. Gloria is excited to connect the dots between community needs and donors’ wishes. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her husband Huntley, daughter Seabrook and golden retriever Hank. With two degrees from the University of South Carolina, she can usually be found cheering on the Gamecocks!

    Margaret Mullis (Donor Services Associate)

    Margaret keeps the Foundation’s database current along with recording incoming contributions and new funds.  Margaret attended the School of Fine Arts in New York City and received her B.A. in English Literature from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  Before entering non-profit work, Margaret held a career as a graphic designer, beginning at a New York City ad agency.  Margaret volunteered with the Foundation for over two years before moving into her current position in 1999.  Margaret is an avid reader, enjoys playing tennis with her team, and continues to hone her art skills.  The Foundation staff always loves when she brings in her homemade baked goods for everyone to enjoy.

    As our Vice President of Finance and Chief Investment Officer, Brian is responsible for finance and investments at Coastal Community Foundation.  He holds a B.S. in Accounting from the College of Charleston and is a Chartered Financial Analyst.  Before landing at the Foundation, Brian worked as a Certified Public Accountant with several firms.  Our financial guru is also an avid Arsenal soccer fan—go Gunners!

    Charlton is a native of Charleston and graduate from Sewanee with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English.  Upon graduation, Charlton attended the Citadel where he received his MBA.  Charlton has a résumé with a variety of work in the field of finance, such as banking, investment advising, and staff accounting.  He has been a part of the Foundation’s team since 2011.

    Joining the Foundation’s team in 2014, Cherie Brown brings expertise to her role as Finance Assistant.  With her husband and children, Cherie moved to the Lowcountry from Wisconsin in 2006.  She has worked in non-profit accounting for over 15 years, spending over 5 of those years with the Disabilities Board of Charleston.  In her spare time, Cherie enjoys all that Charleston has to offer, from swimming and spending time at the beach to watching movies and hanging out with her family.

    Edie oversees the Grants & Programs Department, including its grantmaking and community outreach efforts, serves donors within the Foundation’s service area and matches available resources within the community. She focuses on endeavors throughout the Foundation’s service area, working from Beaufort up to Myrtle Beach, and works with individuals, families and corporations looking to increase impact in their philanthropy. Edie has been part of the Foundation team and called South Carolina “home” for more than a decade. Edie hails from Buffalo, N.Y. where she earned a B.A. in English and History from the State University of New York at Buffalo.

    A native of Beaufort, SC, Sydney oversees several competitive grantmaking programs and provides general support to her department and local non-profits. She has extensive experience in nonprofit administration, including program development, community relations and marketing, grants management and fundraising. Sydney spent five years as Managing Director for the Tribeca Film Festival, later working as the Director of Program Development for the Tribeca Film Institute, where she created art outreach programs and initiatives for NYC youth and artists. Sydney holds a B.A. in English Literature from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a J.D. from the University of South Carolina. She enjoys Tarheel basketball, traveling, and spending time with her husband and two young children.

    Kaela supports the Grants and Programs department as an Administrative Assistant.  Originally from the Upstate, Kaela relocated to North Carolina to earn her Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education and Spanish at Wake Forest University.  After two years of teaching in Greensboro, she moved to Charleston to teach for another few years before transitioning into the nonprofit world.  She has loved learning more about the passionate philanthropic nature of her Lowcountry community!  In her free time, Kaela enjoys reading, running, and playing soccer.

    As a former fundraising professional, Ali has an informed passion for the power of philanthropy. Ali began her career at IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law, where she established and managed the school’s first stewardship and donor relations program. After returning home to South Carolina in 2012, Ali worked in fundraising at The Citadel Foundation and as Director of Development at the American Civil Liberties Union of South Carolina. Ali earned her B.S. in Psychology from Presbyterian College and her Master’s in Public Administration from the College of Charleston, where she focused on nonprofit management. Ali enjoys learning about and supporting the region’s rich nonprofit sector, particularly in the Southern Lowcountry.

    Danica Whitney (Program Assistant)

    A Lowcountry native, Danica was born and raised in Beaufort.  She has called Charleston her home since 1995 when she began her studies at the College of Charleston, earning her B.S. in Psychology in 1999.  Danica rejoins the Foundation as the Program Assistant, after having worked in the position more than ten years ago.  While away she started a business with her husband, had two very active boys and enjoyed being a stay-at-home mom.  At the Foundation Danica is mainly responsible for processing grant requests, reading and writing grant summaries, and supporting various competitive grantmaking programs.

    Monica Tanouye (Communications & Diversity Officer)

    Monica manages marketing, communications and public relations at CCF, promoting the organization across the Lowcountry. She also works on communications efforts at Waccamaw Community Foundation. Beyond communications, she works on diversity, equity and inclusion efforts at CCF spanning operations, grantmaking and philanthropy. Originally from the Midwest, Monica moved to New England for college, where she promptly packed up to study abroad in England, India, Senegal, and Argentina. She graduated summa cum laude from Boston University with a B.A. in Economics in 2014.
