Founded in 1974, Coastal Community Foundation empowers individuals, families, and organizations to make lasting impact through permanent, endowed funds for charitable giving.

The Foundation works with each donor to create an individual philanthropy plan and empowers recipient organizations to expand services, create new initiatives, and implement long-term programming.

 

Coastal Community Foundation is affiliated with the international Council of Foundations and specifically serves eight counties in coastal South Carolina: Charleston, Beaufort, Berkeley, Colleton, Dorchester, Georgetown, Hampton, and Jasper. The Foundation maintains office locations in Charleston and Beaufort.

Affiliates

As a separate legal entity and with its grants determined by an autonomous governing board, an affiliate foundation allows you to retain control of all of your giving without handling the extensive legal and financial paperwork needed to create and run a private foundation.  Coastal Community Foundation also handles asset management for, provides grantmaking and technical assistance to, and offers all non-profit information needed to ease giving decisions to its supporting organizations.

Hide Mission Darby Family Foundation (2001)

To provide charitable resources to the communities and causes about which family members care passionately.

Hide Mission The Jewish Endowment Fund, Inc. (1996)

To encourage donors to endow their support of Jewish causes, the Jewish community and the Charleston Jewish Federation.

Hide Mission Saul Alexander Fund (1997)

To provide grants in the areas and proportions stipulated by Mr. Alexander in his will: 50% to Jewish causes, 15% to charitable causes in Summerville, and 35% to general charitable causes in Charleston County and Summerville.

Hide Mission Frances P. Bunnelle Foundation (2000)

Dedicated  to strengthening and supporting charitable causes serving Georgetown County, South Carolina. Founded by its namesake prior to her death in 2000, the Foundation embodies her vision of a community with abundant opportunity for healthy, safe and sustainable living.

    Starting at the Foundation in 2006, George is unmatched in his local philanthropic expertise, built by thousands of conversations with non-profit leaders and donors throughout the Lowcountry.  With previous experience as a museum director, fundraising professional, and research scientist, George’s broad knowledge base allows him to easily find connections between community needs and donor interests.  He is responsible for envisioning big-picture progress and bridging the relationships needed to get there.  When George is not at work, he enjoys botanical illustrating and Japanese nature painting.

    For those of you who have visited our office at 625 Rutledge Avenue or given us a ring on the phone, you know Liz Marshall.  She is our go-to office manager, responsible for all daily operations from opening up in the morning to banking and batching financial contributions.  Prior to working for the Foundation, Liz was a Telecommunications Administrator for a large public school system in Maryland. Making the move to Charleston to be close to her family and grandchildren, Liz also enjoys working in her garden and traveling.

    Angel Johnson-Brebner (Chief Operating Officer)

    Beginning her time at the Foundation more than ten years ago, Angel Johnson-Brebner knows the ins and outs of donor services.  As Chief Operating Officer, Angel is responsible for donor education and relations as well as day-to-day operational matters.  The Wofford grad also was named to the 2012 Hull Fellowship Class, a leadership program of the Southeastern Council of Foundations for Foundation Leaders.  When she isn’t busy helping fund establishers and contacts with questions, enjoys spending time with her husband, Alec, chasing after her two-year old, gardening, biking with her family, and cooking.

    Working as an executive in human services and higher education fundraising for nearly 15 years, Steffanie has extensive knowledge of the non-profit sector and a high degree of experience in development, major gift solicitation, strategic planning, and capital campaign management.  Steffanie is passionate about working with a variety of individuals and organizations to help them define and reach their philanthropic goals.  In her spare time, Steffanie enjoys cooking, traveling, and family life with her husband John and daughter Hannah.

    Margaret keeps the Foundation’s database current along with recording incoming contributions and new funds.  Margaret attended the School of Fine Arts in New York City and received her B.A. in English Literature from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  Before entering non-profit work, Margaret held a career as a graphic designer, beginning at a New York City ad agency.  Margaret volunteered with the Foundation for over two years before moving into her current position in 1999.  Margaret is an avid reader, enjoys playing tennis with her team, and still draws often.  The Foundation staff always loves when she brings in her homemade baked goods for everyone to enjoy.

    As our Vice President of Finance and Chief Investment Officer, Brian is responsible for finance and investments at Coastal Community Foundation.  He holds a B.S. in Accounting from the College of Charleston and is a Chartered Financial Analyst.  Before landing at the Foundation, Brian worked as a Certified Public Accountant with several firms.  Our financial guru is also an avid Arsenal soccer fan—go Gunners!

    Charlton is a native of Charleston and graduate from Sewanee with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English.  Upon graduation, Charlton attended the Citadel where he received his MBA.  Charlton has a résumé with a variety of work in the field of finance, such as banking, investment advising, and staff accounting.  He has been a part of the Foundation’s team since 2011.

    Joining the Foundation’s team in 2014, Cherie Brown brings expertise to her role as Finance Assistant.  With her husband, children, fish, bird, and dog in tow, Cherie moved to the Lowcountry from Wisconsin in 2006.  She has worked in non-profit accounting for over 15 years, spending over 5 of those years with the Disabilities Board of Charleston.  In her spare time, Cherie enjoys all that Charleston has to offer, from swimming and spending time at the beach to watching movies and hanging out with her family.

    Edie Blakeslee (Regional Vice President)

    Edie, in tandem with Edna Crews, oversees the Grants & Programs Department’s $12M annual grantmaking efforts, matching available resources with community needs. Edie’s primary focus is Berkeley, Charleston, Dorchester, and Georgetown Counties competitive grantmaking programs within the tri-county, and working with donors in the Foundation’s service area. She has been part of the Foundation team and has called South Carolina “home” for more than a decade. Edie hails from Buffalo, N.Y. where she earned a B.A. in English and History from the State University of New York at Buffalo.  She is an expert snowman artist, having co-created one with her daughter, right here in Charleston, in February 2010.

    Edna Davis (Regional Vice President)

    Edna has worked with the Foundation since 2009, managing grantmaking programs for Beaufort, Colleton, Hampton, and Jasper Counties.  She sees her job as connecting donors with resources to those in need to provide long-term community improvement.  Before coming to the Foundation, Edna worked in the Beaufort County School District as the deputy superintendent and later the superintendant.  But don’t be fooled.  Edna’s skills go beyond a school administrator and a beacon to the community.  She also appeared on Broadway in the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee!

    Sydney Meeks Fowler (Program Officer)

    A native of Beaufort, SC, Sydney works in the Grants and Programs Department as a Program Officer, overseeing several competitive grantmaking programs and providing general support to the Department and local non-profits.  She has over twelve years experience in non-profit administration, including program development, community relations and marketing, grants management, and fundraising.  She served as Managing Director for the Tribeca Film Festival for five years and later as the Director of Program Development for the Tribeca Film Institute, creating outreach art programs for NYC youth and overseeing initiatives for new and established artists.  Sydney holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a J.D. from the University of South Carolina.  She enjoys Tarheel basketball, traveling, and spending time with her husband and two young children.

    Richard Hendry (Program Officer)

    Richard oversees grantmaking from most of the Foundation’s donor-advised funds and several competitive funds and provides support to the Foundation’s four Supporting Organizations.  He also provides guidance and information to new, emerging, and existing charitable programs.  In the early 80’s, Richard was the second Foundation employee hired.  Before that Richard earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from LaFayette college and a Masters degree from University of Missouri, served in the U.S. Army’s Honor Guard, taught for eight years at Aiken Prep School, and did research for John Hopkins University.  Richard quickly admits that he has more bad habits than everyone on staff combined, but playing poker in the White House basement with President Nixon is a safe bet to boast about.

    Caroline is a Mount Pleasant native and 2011 graduate of the University of South Carolina with a B.A. degree in Political Science and Environmental Studies.  At the Foundation, the bulk of Caroline’s work is spent reading and writing grant summaries, organizing and facilitating site visits, and managing grant applications.   With previous work in donor relations and as a member of the inaugural NextGen Fellows class, Caroline is well versed in Foundations operations.

    Dorothy Shain (Communications Associate )

    Dorothy is responsible for assisting with the communications and public-relations efforts of Coastal Community Foundation. She eats, breathes, and sleeps social media and believes it to be an integral tool that helps the community connect to the work and causes of the organization. She came to the lowcountry from Washington, DC, where she planned culinary-focused events to raise money to combat childhood hunger in the United States. The Studio Art degree and Human-Rights minor she obtained from Southern Methodist University in 2012 contributes to the creative and unique angle she brings to the table.
