Coastal Community Foundation Opens 2018 Scholarship Applications

Opportunities for students from Tri-County, Beaufort and Jasper counties

Charleston, S.C.January 19, 2018 – Coastal Community Foundation, a grantmaking organization serving coastal South Carolina, has opened 2018 applications for its scholarship programs, including the General Scholarship Program, Reverend Pinckney Scholars Program, and Rufus J. Barkley Jr. Leadership Scholarship Program.
Awards from the General Scholarship Program range from $500-$2,000 for students residing in Berkeley, Charleston or Dorchester Counties. Character, academic success, involvement in extra-curricular and community activities, financial need, academic success, aspirations and ability to overcome obstacles are all considered in scholarship applications, but selection criteria varies by award. Current college students are eligible to apply only if they received a CCF scholarship for the 2017-18 academic year.
The Reverend Pinckney Scholars Program is open to African American high school seniors residing in Beaufort, Charleston or Jasper Counties who plan to attend a 2 or 4-year college in Fall 2018. It is anticipated that up to 10 students will be selected to receive a scholarship of up to $10,000 per year for up to four years, renewable as long as certain criteria are met.
Reverend Pinckney Scholars also receive pre-college training and assistance, contact and support from program staff each school year, and invitations to workshops and events during each student’s tenure as a Reverend Pinckney Scholar. Scholarship finalists will be interviewed at CCF’s Charleston office in May.
The Rufus J. Barkley Jr. Leadership Scholarship is awarded to one applicant annually with a strong academic record, a history of community service, and demonstrated vision, integrity, ethics, leadership and generosity. It is a four-year renewable scholarship with one awardee selected annually.
Prior to applying to any program, students should review scholarship descriptions to determine their eligibility. A PDF with the full list of General Scholarship Program opportunities can be found on the CCF scholarship webpage, which also includes links to applications. Students can click “preview” on the applications to review instructions and other required information before creating an account.
The deadline for these scholarship applications is March 16th. For more information, please contact Caroline Mullis Rakar at caroline@coastalcommunityfoundation.org or visit www.coastalcommunityfoundation.org.
About the Reverend Pinckney Scholars Program
On July 2, 2015, a group of anonymous donors, moved by the tragic murders at Mother Emanuel A.M.E. Church and Charleston’s remarkable response to the shooting, created a $3.2 million scholarship fund in honor of Reverend Clementa C. Pinckney. In March 2016, Coastal Community Foundation began to administer the scholarship fund and its companion program, the Reverend Pinckney Scholars Program.
About the Rufus C. Barkley Jr. Leadership Scholarship
Created in honor of Mr. Rufus C. Barkley, Jr. before his passing in 2001, the scholarship is awarded to one applicant annually with a strong academic record, a history of community service, and demonstrated vision, integrity, ethics, leadership and generosity.
