Reverend Pinckney Scholars Program Information

Through the generosity of anonymous donors, Coastal Community Foundation established the Reverend Pinckney Scholarship Fund in 2016 to promote access to higher education for African American students by awarding scholarships and providing resources through a tailored program throughout college.

The program has experienced tremendous success, and we have expanded services to even better meet the needs of Lowcountry students. Coastal Community Foundation is pleased to provide a new expansion offering: the Reverend Pinckney College Readiness Program, a vibrant, standalone program that provides robust tools and resources to allow high school juniors, their families, and supporters to begin their search, evaluation, and eventual selection of their college of choice.

A cohort of approximately 30 applicants from Beaufort, Charleston and Jasper counties will be selected to participate in the College Readiness Program. Students enrolled in the College Readiness Program will comprise the exclusive group then eligible for consideration for the Reverend Pinckney Scholars Program during their senior year of high school.

Participants will take part in the College Readiness Program including detailed workshops and counseling in the areas of college applications and selection, college tours, ACT/SAT preparation, seeking and obtaining financial aid and scholarships, filling out FAFSA forms, and essential college readiness and real-world skills. Upon completion of this program, each participant will be more financially, academically and emotionally prepared for a successful college experience.

Applications will be accepted in the fall semester of students’ junior year, and selections will be announced in December. The College Readiness Program will run from spring of junior year, through the summer and the fall of senior year. It is designed with flexibility in mind to accommodate students’ activities, work, and personal obligations.

Applicants must be African American students who are currently high school juniors and whose permanent residence is in Beaufort, Charleston, or Jasper County. Applicants must be planning to attend a 2 or 4 year college in Fall 2020. Selection criteria include, but are not limited to, substantial financial need, academic performance, and letters of recommendation. The selection committee will look for character traits and aspirations in applicants that will serve as a fitting legacy to the life of the Reverend Clementa C. Pinckney.

Applications for the Reverend Pinckney College Readiness Program are due by 11:59pm on Friday, November 2, 2018. To access the application, please click here. Questions? Please email Caroline Rakar or view our FAQs.
