N.E.W. Fund Announced $29,856 in Grants to Local Neighborhood Associations

Charleston, SC: August 27, 2014 – The N.E.W. (Neighborhoods Energized to Win) Fund of Coastal Community Foundation is proud to present $29,856 in grants to 11 Lowcountry neighborhood associations in rural and urban areas of Charleston and Colleton Counties.  Established in 1991, the Fund provides small grants ($500-$3,000) for projects that will help improve the quality of life and develop and sustain leadership within low-to-moderate income neighborhoods.  Distributing over $965,000 in grants over its 33-year history, the Fund has helped to build civic pride while increasing the neighborhoods’ participation in the community improvement process.
Selected by a panel of community members under the guidance of Foundation staff, the 2014 grantees’ proposals range from requests for a Community Garden to solid plans to address industrial pollution in residential areas.
This year’s recipients include Mount Horr Village Summer Camp, for its summer enrichment program for Yonges Island youth, Charleston’s Westside Neighborhood Association for newsletters to engage and inform residents,and Hand-In-Hand Community Outreach for improvements to its community center in Ruffin.
Funding sources for this year’s awards include The City of North Charleston (Urban Entitlement Program – CDBG), the Solvay (Rhodia) Fund of Coastal Community Foundation, the Bakker and Zucker Family Funds of Coastal Community Foundation, and the Henry & Sylvia Yaschik Foundation.
