Open Grants of Coastal Community Foundation Announces $309,000 in Awards

Annual program supported 54 nonprofits in Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester Counties for 2017

CHARLESTON, S.C.: December 13, 2017 – Coastal Community Foundation is proud to announce funding of $309,970 for 54 local nonprofits in Berkeley, Charleston, and Dorchester counties. The program, in its twenty-first year of funding, has awarded more than $5.3 million since inception.
Funding allocation is decided by an ad hoc committee of volunteer community members. Nonprofits funded through Open Grants work on a range of issues related to the arts, education, environment, health, human needs and neighborhood and community development.
For example, Vantage Point Foundation, a new grantee will use their unrestricted grant to support post-9/11 veterans in their transition to civilian life. An average day for this group consists of planning/hosting intensive courses designed to address Post Traumatic Stress, Traumatic Brain Injury and everyday challenges faced by veterans. These services coupled with one-on-one follow-up care give veterans and families the tools to successfully reintegrate into their communities.
The Hospice and Palliative Care Foundation will focus their support on the nonprofit’s Pediatric Care Program, which provides financial assistance to families that have a child facing terminal illness. Families are provided with financial assistance to pay for critical expenses – this encompasses bills, wish trips and other expenses that cannot be covered by the families of children affected.
Grantee Storytree Children’s Theatre works in tandem with teachers to create original, theatre-based lesson plans with standards-based curriculum at its core. Funding from Open Grants will help this group support general operations and its team of four trained teaching artists, who visit and work with students at more than fifteen Charleston County schools throughout the school year.
Open Grants was established in 1985 to improve quality of life by supporting the network of nonprofits that serve the Lowcountry community.
