Winthrop Family Allendale/Hampton Fund Announces $60,000 in Grants for 2015

Annual program granted $60,457 to 13 nonprofits serving Hampton and Allendale Counties

CHARLESTON, S.C.: December 7, 2015 – The Winthrop Family Allendale/Hampton Fund of Coastal Community Foundation is proud to announce funding of $60,457 for 13 local nonprofits serving Allendale and Hampton County citizens and addressing any charitable cause, including the arts, education, environment and conservation, health, human needs and community development.
Since its inception fifteen years ago, the Winthrop Family Fund has awarded more than a half-million dollars to an array Allendale and Hampton County nonprofits. Here are some of this year’s grantees:
Allendale Correctional Worship Center received funding for the Sustainable Living Project, a program developed entirely by men serving at Allendale Correctional Institution (ACI). The program is two-fold. First, a curriculum will teach residents about practices for leading sustainable and healthy lifestyles, like growing fresh produce. Then, the produce will be given to individuals in need through the local neighborhood association. This program helps ACI residents give back to their community and helps with rehabilitation – ultimately reducing recidivism.
Allendale Smiles Dental Program works in partnership with the Allendale Public School District to address the overwhelming need for oral healthcare for children from low-income families. Because 85 percent of children in the county are eligible for Medicaid, and only one dentist in the county accepts Medicaid, many children have never seen a dentist. Allendale Smiles’ grant will provide general operating support.
Hampton County First Steps works to prepare children to enter first grade healthy and ready to succeed. Play and Read Along, which received funding, is their newest program to achieve this mission. Helping children ages 0-4 learn through play, Hampton County First Steps walks parents through play that helps develop skills like listening, fine/gross motor and language. This improves social-emotional learning skills and also helps to build the parent/child relationship through verbal interaction.
In 2001, The Winthrop Family created The Winthrop Family Allendale/Hampton Fund in memory of Sarah T. Winthrop to provide a permanent source of funding to support a broad range of charitable programs benefitting citizens in Allendale and Hampton Counties.
