Annual program granted $62,000+ to benefit Hampton and Allendale Counties
CHARLESTON, S.C.: December 19, 2016 – The Winthrop Family Allendale/Hampton Fund of Coastal Community Foundation is proud to announce funding of $62,639 for nonprofits serving Allendale and Hampton County citizens. Grantees address many charitable cause, including the arts, education, health, human needs and workforce development.
Since its inception more than 15 years ago, the Winthrop Family Fund has awarded more than $560,000 to an array of Hampton and Allendale County nonprofits. Here are a couple of this year’s grantees:
Fennell Elementary School – Thanks to support from the Winthrop Family Fund, Fennell Elementary’s Community Technology Center (FTC) will expand its opening hours to community members to include two two-hour evening sessions per week. These opening hours will greatly enhance high-speed internet access in the town of Yemassee; currently, the closest public facility for internet access is in Hampton, a 40-mile round trip away. The evening sessions will be staffed by teachers and assistants who can help with job applications, FAFSA forms, online GED coursework and other needs. Additionally, grant funding will support the replacement of old computers, benefitting students who use the facility during the day and the community as a whole.
United Ministries of Hampton County – Through their Teen After School Center, United Ministries of Hampton County provides at-risk youth with experience in the S.C. Department of Juvenile Justice (SCDJJ) with tutoring, mentoring and other enrichment activities. The program’s goal is to keep kids in school while helping them improve their relationships with school and others around them. Ultimately, this will help the kids handle problems throughout their lives and build a sense of ownership over their own actions. Their Winthrop Family Fund grant provided general operating support towards the Center.
In 2001, The Winthrop Family created The Winthrop Family Allendale/Hampton Fund in memory of Sarah T. Winthrop to provide a permanent source of funding to support a broad range of charitable programs benefitting citizens in Allendale and Hampton Counties.
