Created by friends of Rufus Barkley in 2000, the fund accepts applications from students who are residents of Charleston, Berkeley, Dorchester, or Colleton counties. Financial need may be considered in making the award, but academic merit and character are the principal criteria. We will look for evidence of well-rounded interests and demonstrated concern for those less fortunate. One award will be made, renewable for each of 4 years of college.

Average award: $10,000

Criteria for eligibility

  • Students must be residents of Charleston, Berkeley, Dorchester, or Colleton counties.

Application process and schedule

  • Applications can be completed online beginning mid-January. Each applicant will only complete one application and the online system will automatically pair you with scholarships for which you are eligible. The deadline for all applications to be submitted, including letters of recommendation, is mid-March. All applicants will be contacted regarding their application status by early July.  Specific deadlines can be found on our scholarship portal each year, which can be accessed through the “Apply” button on our Scholarships for Current High School Seniors page.
